| SmeaGollum1 | Hello Athran, I think most people here can speak, at least, a bit of English. So, if you wish to switch to Englsih sometimes, I don't think that anyone would bother. Your main problem at the moment is, that you try to translate word-by-word. And especially the (very complex) German grammar. Well, when I learned English, I was glad that, after three month, I was able to say something like "Hello, my name is...". So from that point of view, I'd say you're pretty far in learning German ;). The best way to learn German (as well as any other language) is IMHO "learning-by-reading". Maybe not "Faust" right at the beginning, although it's the best advertising for the German language. So maybe you start a thread in "Buchsalon" to get some suggestions on German books of a topic you are interested in. BTW: Why do you want to learn German, it's really not the easiest language in the world? I wonder how many mistakes I made in this text (after 8 years of learning English at school). Was it understandable? |

Especially the grammar and spelling. I study a grammar book often. I can imagine how much people here would laugh if they heard my pronouncation of words :). I want to learn German mainly because a game I play on the net, for the last few months, most people there have been German. Besides people who come from an English speaking country, I speak to German people the most. My niece (7yrs old) also lives in Germany. I think it's a nice language and I have had thoughts of moving to Germany. It's much easier than French. I tried for 6 months and I already know far more German than French. ~Athran~ |

(I thank God every (each? Never really found out when to say what) day that my mother tongue is one with all these articles, I'd run mad if I had to learn them ...) And, coming to a board is IMO a pretty good idea to learn a language ... I went to school, and learned English, and then I went to university, and learned English and then I entered the web, threw all that English overboard and finally learned how to express myself in English *grin*. But it is still related to English, so that makes things easier;) Well, by the way, you should check out some German internett radios. So you will get to know the pronounciation of the words. The articles aren't so bad providing that you learn the 'der/die/das' as a part of the word when a new word is learnt, but still, mistakes are made. I'll look into when to put verbs at the end of the sentance once I get the idea of the cases (dative, ect), it's a bit confusing for now (but I'm starting to get the hang of der -> den). Sangra : No one would get anywhere if they gave up. Yes, German is hard. But if other people can learn it (or another language), then so can I. For immigrants german is a really difficult language, that´s right. I think if I´d have to learn german at this time, it would be difficult, too.
